1,500 Homes proposed for Goleta

A developer proposed to Goleta officials a plan Thursday that envisions up to 1,500 housing units and a 24-acre public park on the Bishop Ranch, the largest tract left on the urban South Coast where new housing is possible.

The plan for the 265-acre agricultural tract shows an area for apartments, six “villages” with various housing types, a seven-acre shopping center geared toward the neighborhood, a school site and public gardens. It also shows a new segment of Calle Real through the property that would connect a gap in the busy road that parallels Highway 101.

The initial conceptual plan is intended to give city officials an idea of what the builder would do with residential zoning on the agricultural tract. In order for the plan to proceed the general city plan will have to designate the historic Bishop Ranch for residential use.
